Dance 11
Goal:
To develop an enhanced understanding of the role that physical movement and dance play in our lives. Dance 11 will provide students with the opportunity to be active and develop their physical fitness; to strengthen their artistic skills; to learn the basic rudiments of music; to appreciate team work and collaboration; to begin choreographing, to broaden their cultural awareness and respect for not only one another but for all influences within the Dance World.
Dance 11 is comprised of four units:

* Dance 11 Showcase - this is a mandatory end of term performance that the class will prepare throughout the course.

Dance 11/12: Individual Project: African Dance
1) Choose a country/region in Africa. Dance is an integral part of all African cultures so you will have no difficulty finding lots of information.
2) Your project must include the following elements:
a) A map of Africa highlighting the country you have chosen
b) Descriptions of two types of dance: one traditional and one more modern
c) Reasons for performing each dance ( celebration, harvest, wedding, courtship, etc. )
d) Participants ( men, women, children, spectators, etc. )
e) Instruments ( voice, drums, traditional homemade instruments, etc. )
f) Costumes
g) Two main differences between traditional African dance and traditional Western dance ( Canada, U.S.)
h) Importance or value of dance in African societies
i) Musical training of young children
j) Your personal appreciation or opinion of the dances you have presented
k) Two YouTube videos depicting the dances you have chosen
You may use powerpoint, prezi or any other format you choose for your presentation.

Square Dance Around The World
1) Each group will chose a country or region in which a type of square dancing is popular.
Possible choices: Scotland, Ireland, England, Australia, New Zealand and several regions of North America (Southern U.S., New England, New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, Colorado, The Ozark's: Missouri and Arkansas, Québec, Cape Breton, Newfoundland, etc.)
2) Research and organize your project using the following criteria:
a) Type of dance and its origins or history in the region you have chosen
b) Type of music and instruments typically used to accompany the dancers
c) Role of the caller
d) Costumes and footwear typically worn by dancers
e) Social customs surrounding square dances ( i.e. fund raisers)
f) An additional idea of your choice
3) Your presentation should be in the form of a powerpoint, prezi, etc. and include images and a short YouTube video demonstating an aspect of your dance. Each member of the group will be expected to contribute equally to the presentation.
4) Creative component: Each group will practice and demonstrate a short dance routine accompanied by traditional music.

It does not take a professionally trained ballet dancer to recognize and appreciate the greatness in Juliet Doherty's dancing. After watching the following video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShswlNMaUSA) comment on five (5) moments where Juliet shows greatness through her dancing (you are encouraged to comment on the physical, emotional and expressive characteristics). When developing your answer, make sure to reference the time (ie. 3:58) where each of these 'great' moments are demonstrated.

Lesson 3: The History of Dance
Create a slideshow (lasting a minimum of 1.5 minutes) portraying the history of dance. The history can start as early as the 1500s. You may choose to show a variety of styles or simply show how one style has evolved and changed over the years. You are encouraged to use video, photo, text, phrases, music, choreography, etc. to show the history. Please note that this assignment will be evaluated equally for its historical content and creativity.
Duet Choreography - Present on Wednesday May 10th
10% timing (being on the beat, and the duet needs to be a minimum of two minutes in length)
10% costume (appropriate to dance theme and style)
15% synchronization (movements being performed together)
50% choreography (development, use of space (high, low, medium, shapes, formations, and creativity of the duet)

Highland Dance Discovery: (Monday June 5th)
Answer the following questions :
1) What are the three types of Highland dances? Explain the two character dances, what do they represent?
2) When did Highland dancing begin? Where was Highland dancing developed?
3) How did the Higlalnd Fling and Sword dance originate?
4) What is the official female and male costume fo Highland Dancing? Include everything from head to toe.
