Save our Planet
With Earth Day quickly approaching on April 22nd, we will be learning about our environment for the month of April. Students will be discovering facts about our environment, sustainable energy, recycling, water consumption, etc. in preparation for a number of exciting projects. We will be completing the following projects this month:
Lesson 1: (Monday April 4)
Step 1 - Teacher guided discussion about the environment (local and global issues) as a follow up to last week's presentation.
Step 2 - Students will work with a partner to research five interesting facts about one of the following topics:
Step 4 - Class discussion about what we can do as a class to help save our environment.
Lesson 2: (Tuesday April 5 & Thursday April)
Step 1 - Teacher guided read aloud and multiple choice questions.
Step 2 - Students will read the information a second time and complete the 'Fill in the Gap' exercise on this website: http://www.breakingnewsenglish.com/1402/140220-renewable-energy.html
Step 3 - students will answer and hand in the comprehension questions for 'Renewable Energy' on the same website.
Lesson 3: (Monday April 11)
Step 1 - Teacher guided discussion about how grade seven students can make a difference by protecting our environment.
Step 2 - Students will get into groups of two or work individually to share an important message about protecting our environment. Students have to come up with a message, phrase, or moto about protecting our environment. They can present this message using one of the following:
Lesson 4: (Tuesday April 12 and Wednesday April 13)
Step 1 - Teacher guided discussion about the role of a politician when it comes to saving the environment.
Step 2 - Students will gather information about the current state of the environment in Bridgewater via Internet.
Step 3 - Students will focus on three points of information that effect their health and well being.
Step 4 - Watch the following videos about writing formal letters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwqtjZX8Gzg and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ns_Fxn-0z_E&nohtml5=False
Step 5 - Students will write a letter to a local politician outlining their concerns about the environment in Bridgewater. Students must include the following in the letter:
Lesson 5: (Thursday April 14)
Step 1 - Teacher guided discussion about the beauty of the Earth and maintaining its riches.
Step 2 - Watch the following video 'Nature is Speaking': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmVLcj-XKnM
Step 3 - Students will close their eyes after watching the video and concentrate on the first three ideas or words that come to mind and then record them.
Step 4 - Students will then use their three ideas as inspiration for writing a poem about the Earth. Students may write one of the following types of poems: haiku, acrostic or free verse.
Step 5 - Students will present their poem to a small group of peers and submit it to the teacher via Showbie.
Lesson 6: Political Address (Monday April 18)
Step 1 - Teacher guided discussion about the role of the minister of the environment and how to make a public speech.
Step 2 - Students will collaborate with a partner (or choose to work individually) about three key points they need to discuss with the public to improve our environment.
Step 3 - With the teacher's support, students will write a political address (speech) about the three key points. The speech must be 1-1.5 minutes in length and language is very important. If students are working with a partner, they should take turns speaking. Students are encouraged to use a formal and professional vocabulary.
Step 4 - Students wil present their speeches in class on Wednesday April 20th. Students are encouraged to dress professionally (they can borrow clothing from the drama boxes).
Lesson 7: A picture is worth a thousand words... (Wednesday April 20)
Step 1 - Teacher will show a variety of pictures of the current state of the environment to the class.
Step 2 - Students will create a twenty (20) picture slide show on the environment with background music.
Step 3 - The twenty (20) pictures must include:
Step 5 - Teacher guided discussion about their thoughts and feelings after viewing the slideshows.
Lesson 8: My Thoughts (Thursday April 21)
Step 1 - Weather pending, students will be going on a walk to collect garbage.
Step 2 - Students will complete a hand written journal about the effect our community has on our local environment.
Step 3 - Hand in journal to the teacher.
Lesson 9: Media affects (Monday April 25)
Step 1 - Students will research events being held around the globe for Earth Day.
step 2 - Students will find their favourite 'tweet' about Earth Day.
Step 3 - Students will share their findings with their small group.
Step 4 - Students will pick one event that interests their group the most and share this event with the class.
Lesson 10: (Endangered Species Awareness) (April 26 & 27)
Step 1- As a follow up to Madame Bergeron's lesson on endangered species students will discuss well know endangered species around the World.
Step 2 - Students will then choose an endangered species that interests them and complete research about the 5 Ws: Who? What? When? Where? and Why?
Step 3 - After gathering the information about their endangered species (Who discovered the species? What is being done to help save the endangered species? When did the species become endangered or added to the official list? Where is the species located? Why did the endangerment occur in the first place?
Step 4 - Students will create a paper poster with a picture of the endangered species and all information included in the 5 Ws.
Step 5 - Students will present their poster to the class.
Lesson 11: (Radion Interview) (Thursday April 28)
Step 1 - students will play the role of a local radio station host
Step 2 - students will prepare a list of ten questions to ask the owner of a large company that is planing to move to Bridgewater (this company will produce over 100 gallons of liquid and solid waste per month but will make 300 jobs for local residents, the new company will be built near the LCLC and all tress will be removed from the area)
Step 2 - students find a partner to help compile the ten very inquisitive questions
Step 3 - students will submit their questions on Showbie
- political address on the environment
- a group debate
- an audio visual presentation on the changes that affect our Planet due to human use and consumption
- a diary of personal thoughts and stands on environmental issues (local and global)

- a paragraph about your possible solutions or ideas to help save the environment in Bridgewater
- a closing remark
- your full name
