Overview: We will be spending the next month or two on our novel study, the Hatchet by Gary Paulsen.
Introductory Lessons were covered in class from January 4-8 with Mrs. Bergeron (including in class reading of chapters 1, 2, 3 and 4). Lesson 2: Critical thinking and analysis (January 11) Step 1 - Class discussion of the novel thus far. Step 2 - Students will complete a questionnaire about chapters one and two (with use of their novels). Step 3 - Students will hand in questionnaire. Lesson 3: Chapter 5 and 'the modern literature circle' (January 12) Step 1 - What is a modern literature circle? (teacher to discuss) Step 2 - Teacher guided read aloud of chapter 5. Step 3 - Create groups for literary circles. Step 4 - Create schedule for literature circle 'characters'. Step 5 - Complete roles for literature circle and present to the teacher. Lesson 4: Chapter 6 (Jan. 19) Step 1 - Teacher guided read aloud of chapter 6. Step 2 - Students will complete the following comprehension questions for chapter 6. Questions:
Step 3 - Students will pass in questions to Mrs. Bergeron on Friday January 15th. Step 4 - Get into literacy circle groups and complete your role for chapter 6. Lesson 5: Chapter 7 (Jan. 20) Step 1 - Teacher guided read aloud of chapter 7. Step 2 - Complete roles for literature circle and present to the teacher. Lesson 6: Chapter 8 & 9 (Jan. 21) Step 1 - Teacher guided read aloud of chapter 8 and 9. Step 2 - Complete roles for literature circle roles for chapters 8 and 9 and present to the teacher. Step 3 - Complete personal journal entry: 'what would you do from this point forward in the book if you were Brian'? (one page double spaced to be handed in to the teacher on January 22nd). Lesson 7: Chapter 10 Step 1 - Teacher guided read aloud of chapter 10. step 2 - Complete and pass in personal journal entry. January 25th (a short break from our novel study) Robbie Burns Day January 25th is Robbie Burns Day and to celebrate and learn more about this day we are going to read some poetry, study some old Scottish traditions and practice our Scottish accents. Lesson 1: Robbie Burns Day Step 1 - Teacher read aloud of 'Up in the Morning Early'. Step 2 - Students will get into groups of two and make a list of 8-10 Scottish words and write the English equivalent while the teacher will read the poem a second time. Lesson 8 : Chapter 11 (January 26th) Step 1 - Teacher read aloud of chapter 11. Step 2: Continue to complete Robbie Burns questions and crossword. Lesson 9: Chapter 12 and 13 (January 27th) Step 1 - Teacher guided read aloud of chapters 12 and 13. Step 2 - Complete literature circle role for chapter 11 and 12 combined. Lesson 10: Chapter 14 and 15 (February 1st) Step 1: Teacher guided read aloud of chapters 14 and 15. Step 2: Complete and present literature circle role for chapter 16. Lesson 11: Chapter Chapter 16 (February 2nd) Step 1: Teacher guided read aloud of chapter 16. Step 2: Complete and present literature circle role for chapter 16. Lesson 12 : Chapter 17 (February 3rd) Step 1: Teacher guided read aloud of chapter 17. Step 2: Class discussion to summarize the chapter. Step 3: Class will get into their literature circle groups. Step 4: Each group will complete the following task: Create a visual list of the best ten (10) items that Brian could find in the survival kit. Include a picture and brief explanation of each item and why it would be useful for survival. Students can create their presentation on the iPad or on paper. Lesson 13: Chapter 18, 19 and Epilogue (February 5th-10th) Step 1: Teacher guided read aloud of chapters and epilogue. Step 2: Class discussion of the chapters. Lesson 14: Introduce 'Hatchet Book Report' (February 10th) Step 1: Teacher introduces the guidelines for the book report (see above right) Step 2: Students select their paragraph topics. Create a list of the four topics and why they choose them. Lesson 15: Book Summary (February 11th) Step 1: Students will write a one paragraph summary of the book 'The Hatchet' on their iPads. Step 2: Students will works with a partner to edit each others paragraph (spelling, using synonyms for repeated words, making sure the paragraph is double spaced). Step 3: Once editing is complete, save the paragraph and take a screen shot. Lesson 16: Creative Expression (February 12th) Step 1: Students will select one of the following assignments to complete today in class:

Step 3: Students will works with a partner to edit each others paragraph (spelling, using synonyms for repeated words, making sure the paragraph is double spaced). Step 4: Once editing is complete, save the paragraph and take a screen shot. Lesson 18: Topic Elaboration (February 17th) Step 1: Students will write their third paragraph for their book report. Step 2: Students will select a quite directly from the book to use in their paragraph. Step 3: Students will works with a partner to edit each others paragraph (spelling, using synonyms for repeated words, making sure the paragraph is double spaced). Step 4: Once editing is complete, save the paragraph and take a screen shot. Step 3: Students will select a quite directly from the book to use in their paragraph. Step 2: Students will create their 'grabber' sentence for their introduction. Step 3: Students will present their 'grabber' sentences to the teacher. Step 4: Students will develop their introduction paragraphs. Step 5: Students will works with a partner to edit each others paragraph (spelling, using synonyms for repeated words, making sure the paragraph is double spaced). 'Hatchet Book Report':While completing this book report, you will share your opinion about four (4) of the following seven (7) topics:
You will need to include: - a cover page - 4 quotes from the Hatchet (we will learn how to properly quote a book) - an introduction - body (including 4 separate paragraphs for each topic - a conclusion - a works cited page Cover Page: Title Date Presented to Presented by (all information centered on the page) Introduction: introduces the book report and all of the topics you will discuss throughout the report. Remember to grab the reader's attention with a great starter sentence. Body: includes four separate paragraphs, one for each topic you will write about. Conclusion: will conclude all of the ideas you presented in your report. You should have a sentence for each topic in the conclusion and then finish with a great statement that leaves the reader thinking. Literature Circle Roles:Role 1: Blogger - writes a summary about what happened in the chapter, or something they liked or disliked about an event or situation in the chapter.
Role 2: Artist - draws, sings, acts, dances or writes a poem about what occurred in the chapter Role 3: Tweeter - writes a tweet quoted from the chapter and explains why this tweet is important. Role 4: CSI - investigates a fact from the chapter and should research some information to support their theory. Role 5: Journalist - asks their group five (5) specific questions about what happened in the chapter. |
