Unit 1: Put Your Best Foot Forward
The goal of this unit is to develop strengths in the areas of listening, reading, writing and speaking through activities based on the themes of:
- Courage
- Setting personal goals
- Participation (cause and effect)
Lessons:
Lesson 1:
Activity 'A':
Class discussion about the cause and effect of your actions and how they impact your future within the school, in the community, with your family and friends.
Food for thought:
We are all unique.
We are all different.
Everyone is good at something.
We all have something to offer to the people around us.
Activity 'B':
Step 1 - Introduce yourself to the person next to you.
Step 2 - Tell them what are you good at. Talk to them about your strengths and what you can offer others?
Step 3 - You and your partner will need to join another group.
Step 4 - Introduce your partner to the group and share your partners' strengths to the group. (Each group member will have a turn to speak about their partner)
Activity 'A':

Lesson 2:
Create a television commercial (advertisement) for 'Putting Your Best Foot Forward'.
Goal - you and your team want to win a competition to have your advertisement played on air during the 2016 NFL SuperBowl.
Monday September 14th
Part 1:
Step 1 - Watch the example video
Step 2 - Have a class discussion about:
Step 5 - Writer - writes the dialogue while collaborating (talking about it) with group members.
Producer - creates storyboard and decides (with group members) who will be acting, filming, etc
DJ - selects music and discusses lighting and special effects with group members
Tuesday September 16th- Journal (majority of class gone to cooking session)
Thursday September 17th
Part 2:
Responsibilities:
Producer - begin the story board (you must outline all scenes and points of view for recording)
Writer - complete and assign dialogue to characters
- divide dialogue by scene (numbered by the producer on the story board)
DJ - makes a list of sounds, songs and lighting that will be used
All group members - complete a list of props and costumes that you will need for filming the advertisement
Upcoming Tasks for September 21-23:
Step 1 - Record advertisement (with help of a green screen if you need it)
Step 2 - Edit your advertisement (is there dead space? do the scenes flow nicely? is the volume loud enough?)
Step 3 - Show your advertisement to the 'marketing committee for the Super Bowl.

Inspiration to be the best you can be comes from all walks of life. Lets take today's class to do some reading and see what inspirational stories or articles you can find that best fit our theme, 'Putting Your Best Foot Forward'.
Step 1 - research and read through some articles, stories or blogs that have inspired you to be and/or do the best you can do
Step 2 - Copy and paste the link of the article (blog, etc.) to a Word document
Step 3 - Answer the reflection questions
Step 4 - Share your answers with the teacher (in person or via email: [email protected])
Questions:
1) Who is the article about?
2) What specific part of the article inspired you? And why?
3) Do you think you will now act differently and put your best foot forward?
4) How could this article help to inspire others?

While focusing on your strengths, you are going to develop a collage that shows everyone your personal strengths through a series of images.
Step 1 - Select a collage app, for example: Pic Collage (or another app)
