Unit 2: Unsolved Mysteries
Goal - to create a short story (theme - unsolved mystery)
Lesson 1: (September 29th)
Step 1 - Class discussion about setting. (What is setting? How do we create setting)
Step 2 - Download the 'Cluster Gram' App or choose to use 'Pages'
Step 3 - Complete the Graphic with the following group titles:
Lesson 2: (September 30th)
Step 1 - we will learn how to 'take notes' while reading and viewing the following presentation about setting and characters https://prezi.com/tmyqdcdkw4si/character-and-setting/
Step 2 - make a list of all of the important things you will need to create your 'perfect short story setting'

Step 1 - Answer the following questions :
Lesson 4: (October 13)
Character Development
Step 1: create 4 main characters
Step 2: Write a paragraph (minimum of 4 sentences) about the physical and personality traits of each character.
Step 3: Complete a spell check for all paragraphs, make sure your paragraphs are double spaced, check spelling and ponctuation and capital letters at the beginning of each sentence.
Step 4: Send your complete 'Character List' to Madame McKinnon via 'Showbie'
Lesson 5: (October 19-21)
Beginning our Mysterious Short Story.
Step 1: Decide from which perspective your short story will be written: the perspective of one of the characters, the perspective of a narrator, or through dialogue.
Step 2: Set your tone and decide what type of visual you would like to provide the reader.
Step 3: Write your first draft to your mysterious short story introduction.
Step 4: Complete a spell check, double space your introduction, check spelling and ponctuation and capital letters at the beginning of each sentence.
Step 5: Send your 'introduction' to Madame McKinnon via 'Showbie'.
Step 6: Have a personal 'writing conference' with your teacher to make any necessary corrections to your introduction.
Lesson 6: (October 26-29)
Read Aloud
Madame McKinnon will be spending a few minutes at the beginning of each class doing a 'read aloud' (reading a story to the class). We will begin with Edgar Allan Poe's 'The Tell-Tale Heart'.
We will complete the following during the week:
- review vocabulary words and definitions for 'The Tell-Tale Heart'
- discuss the role of imagery in the short story
- analyze the short story
- create a visual representation of the short story
- write a newspaper column

Visual Representation: The Tell-Tale Heart Drawing ActivityImagine you work for a newspaper as the staff’s artist. One of your coworkers comes to you with a great story on Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” and asks you to illustrate it. For this news assignment, you must do the following:
- Choose a memorable scene from the story (example: the murder scene, the confession scene, etc.) and illustrate it in color.
- Give an explanation of the picture – what is happening in this scene? Be as specific as possible.
- Finally, you must include two kinds of figurative language, which you come up with on your own, to make your description more interesting (choose two: alliteration, onomatopoeia, metaphor, simile, and personification)
