Heroes
Lesson 1:
Step 1 - Write your own definition of a hero.
Step 2 - Research a definition from a dictionary (or online) of a hero.
Step 3 - Complete the following journal entry: 'Share a story about someone you have met who has the qualities of a hero. Explain what they did and why you respect them.' Make sure to check your journal entry for spelling, capital letters at the beginning of each sentence, organized paragraphs. Your journal entry should be between 150 and 250 words.
Step 4 - Submit your definition of a hero, the dictionary definition of a hero and your journal included in one document on Showbie.
Lesson 2:
Step 1 - Class discussion about super heroes and local heroes.
Step 2 - Come up with your own idea for a new super hero.
Step 3 - Draw your super hero.
Step 4 - Write five (5) interesting facts about your super hero (on the same page as your drawing).
Step 5 - Pass in your drawing and five facts via Showbie.
Lesson 3: 'South Shore Hero Competition'
Goal - You will be entering a fun class competition to see who will be crowned the South Shore Hero. You will need to dress up as three different characters, the super hero that you created in lesson two (2) and both fictive community members.
Step 1 - Watch the video for We are Heroes (Australian version).
Step 2 - Class discussion about how to make an audition video for the South Shore Hero.
Step 3 - Create two fictional community members who deserve to become the South Shore Hero.
Step 4 - Write a brief paragraph about each character and prepare what each will do and say for the audition video.
Step 5 - Record your super hero and two community members auditioning for the South Shore Hero.
Step 6 - Edit your video and add text including the character's name and occupation.
Step 7 - Add music and select appropriate transitions between scenes.
Step 8 - Show your video to a friend to see if they have any advice to make it better.
Step 9 - Present your video to the class for the final audition.
Step 10 - The class will vote for the top three heroes.
Step 11 - The top three heroes must arrive in costume for their next class and the selected judges (high school students) will select the winner for the 'South Shore Hero 2015' by viewing their audition videos. The winner will receive a gift card.
Lesson 4: Songs from the Heart
Goal - to make connections between the strengths of a hero and leaving a legacy
Step 1 - Read the lyrics to Hero by Mariah Carey
Step 2 - Class discussion about the song lyrics
Step 3 - Listen to the song Hero
Step 4 - Answer the following questions and send in the answers via Showbie:
Step 5 - Students get into groups of two or three
Step 6 - Students will create their own song themed around 'heroes'
Step 7 - Songs should have atleast one verse and a chorus (any genre is permitted, you may use a pre-existing melody for karokee and simply create the lyrics, or create the song from scratch with Garage Band)
