Lighten Up
The goal of this unit is to develop our speaking and listening skills while working with others. We will be exploring our interests, the interests of others as well as experimenting with new forms of expression and vocabulary.
Lesson 1: What makes you tick? (March 1st)
Step 1: Teacher guided lesson about the meaning of : 'what makes you tick?'.
Step 2: Students will get into small groups and talk about what makes them tick.
Step 3: Students will then be regrouped and asked to present their group member to the new group members.
Step 4: Class discussion about what we have in common with one another.
Lesson 2: What is a vlog? (March 2nd)
Step 1: Teacher guided discussion about Internet safety and the difference between a blog and a vlog.
Step 2: Teacher guided questions about youtube.
Step 3: Students will view a variety of videos created by popular vloggers.
Step 4: The class will discuss what makes a good vlog: topic, speech, lighting, apparel, scene changes, editing, background music, guest appearances, etc.
step 5: Students will evaluate a vlog with the class evaluation in Lesson 5.
Lesson 3: Creating a vlog. (March 3rd)
Step 1: Students will create a group list of curent topics of interest that they would like to speak about.
Step 2: Students will select 3 topics from the group list.
Step 3: Students will makes some notes about what they would like to say about each topic and how their conversation will flow from topic to topic.
step 4: Students will plan to record during their next class. They will plan their background, clothing, etc.
Lesson 4: Recording the vlog. (March 4th)
Step 1: Students will find a partner to record for them.
Step 2: Students will record their vlog.
Step 3: Students will edit their vlogs.
Lesson 5: Presenting the vlog. (March 7th)
Step 1: Teacher guided discussion about the pros and cons about vlogging and what difficulties were had by the students during the creation.
Step 2: Students will presnet their vlogs to the class.
Step 3: Peer evaluations - Students will evaluate each others vlog according to the following details:
Lesson 6: Words, words, words...Time to learn about Shakespeare (March 8th)
Step 1 - Teacher guided discussion about the influence of words, whether spoken, written or sung.
Step 2 - Teacher will discuss Thursday's presentation: 'Shakespeare on Trial'.
Step 3 - Students will watch the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdCjKH5IKJ8
Step 4 - Students will discuss some of their favorite writers.
Step 5 - Students will prepare the following information about one of their favorite songs and present a clip (15-30 seconds of their song) to the class :
Lesson 7: Who is Shakespeare anyway? (March 9th)
Step 1 - Students will get into groups of two (they may work individually if they wish).
Step 2 - Teacher will distribute questionnaire on 'Common facts about Shakespeare'.

Lesson 8: (March 10)
Shakespeare on Trial - assembly in the gymnasium
Lesson 10: (March 11th)
Step 1 - Teacher guided discussion about the Shakespeare on Trial presentation.
Step 2 - Students will work in groups of two or three to conduct a short interview about their thoughts on the Shakespeare on Trial presentation. Students must complete the vlog according to the following guidelines:
Lesson 11: (March 29 & 30)
Step 1 - Teacher guided discussion about current events (issues) or 'hot topics' that affect Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, Canada, and the World.
Step 2 - Students will work with a partner (or individually if they choose) to research a current issue or event.
Step 3 - Students will create a slide show of ten (10) images to help present their topic.
Step 4 - Students will present their slide shoes to the class discussing their topic.

- Language - is the vlogger using appropriate language? yes, most of the time, sometimes, no
- Content - is the vlogger discussing the three chosen topics and staying on task? yes, most of the time, sometimes, no
- Style - is the vlogger creating their own style to attract the viewer and keep their interest? yes, most of the time, sometimes, no

- One student should be the 'interviewer' and the other student(s) should answer the questions.
- Include 8 questions.
- Prepare the questions in advance.
- Make eye contact.
- Use intonation and gestures while speaking.
- Use proper grammar (ain't, frik, etc. are not acceptable)
